3 Helpful Tips for Styling Your Jewelry

3 Helpful Tips for Styling Your Jewelry

As long as humans have roamed the earth they’ve basically been wearing jewelry. While the people of today are no exception to this trend, we’re all familiar with the tale as old as time of finding the right jewelry that speaks to your style. But why is selecting jewelry to wear sometimes a tedious task?!

First off, I’ll start by saying that what constitutes beauty is different from person to person. It’s impossible to universalize the definition of ‘beautiful’ because everyone accentuates it differently. There’s many reasons why people wear jewelry: maybe it holds an emotional quality or maybe you simply look like the bombdotcom. But when it comes to the way it looks, it doesn’t mean there isn’t some science involved.

It’s all about the symmetry! Because jewelry is an accessory, its function is to highlight features on your clothing or body. Maybe it’s the color scheme involved or the angle at which it’s positioned, jewelry serves the composition of your frame. If you’re familiar with photography this concept might be familiar to you.

 Composition

Think of your body like a picture and your jewelry as the lines in frame pointing to the subject (which is you, your outfit). Take for example this picture of a model featuring some of our gold collection. Do you notice the angle in which the necklace is pointing down like a ‘V’? The structure of this V mirrors the similar ‘V’ shapes found in the cut of her shirt and the angle of her face. Next check out the verticality of her earrings and how it parallels the structure of her cheekbones. Patterns like this are easier for the brain to process because they are symmetrical. It actually is literally less tiring for our brains to look at. So how can you figure out the composition of your style? Everyone’s different and there’s no right answer. But learn from the principles from photography. Avoid shapes that draw attention to the wrong features. Organize your jewelry in a way that pulls focus to the subject of your outfit—you!

 Color

Live in color. Truth be told, there is no other more important component that can make or break your aesthetic. Lets check back in using our model as an example. First lets look at her necklaces again. The gold in the necklace accents the color in her shirt but is buffered by the dark contrast of her dirty blonde hair. If you look further, you’ll see that the blue sapphire in the gold necklace equally tones her eye color. Not only are you looking for what colors work with an outfit; you’re also looking at how they compliment each other. Similarly to composition a bad color relationship is hard to organize by the brain. It may seem basic, but the coordination of colors organized in this picture is broken down specifically: the gold picks up the colors in her complexion; the blue compliments the ferocity of her eyes.

 Shape

Lastly you’ll want to consider shape. Arguably the most distinguishing feature in an aesthetic, the shape of your jewelry offers the most dexterity to your style. We’ve talked before about the importance of considering the big picture composition of your outfit, and now we want to extend that concept to include how everything fits together—literally. Everything has to be in conversation so when you’re arranging your jewelry pay careful attention to how the shapes communicate with one another. Our model’s selection works because there aren’t any shapes present that seem out of place with everything else that’s there. Thin lines and angular cuts with our necklaces are congruent with the frail length earrings. The style of the long thread earring is similar enough to the sapphire necklace that they help draw focus towards our model’s face. The radial pattern at tip of the sapphire necklace and the earring as well as the ring are in conversation with the radius of our model’s eyes. It flows together nicely because all the shapes presented have shared qualities with each other.

When it comes to concocting a bangin’ outfit, consider composition, color and shape in your jewelry wears. Of course everyone seeks different things with their fashion. While this guide sought to help you find a flow with what you wear, there’s plenty of reason to go against the grain. At the end of the day, jewelry is about you and what you want that to be. If you like something by all means wear it! If it makes you feel beautiful, embrace it because that’s what truly matters.
